Skoda overtakes BMW & Mercedes-Benz by shunning “tech gimmicks”

Luxury cars jam-packed with the latest technology — what could possibly go wrong?

We’ve seen this disaster happen before with “smart home” tech, that nobody asked for and in many cases makes our lives less convenient.

Now cars are the latest victims.

Tech problems dominate complaints

Desirable brands like BMW, Land Rover and Mercedes Benz have crashed to the bottom of the rankings and are now more likely to develop faults than cheaper cars, according to the latest JD Power Survey which ranks car reliability. The cause? Technology.

We’ve long suspected the latest car gimmicks including 4G wifi and voice-recognition systems were substandard and potentially dangerous.

Have you tried in-car voice control systems? They make Siri look polished.

Systems we’ve tried were so bad they force you to take your eyes off the road for long periods, while you try to undo the harm they’ve already done on your behalf.

JD Power’s latest survey confirms our suspicions.

Five of the top ten problems found with new cars were tech related and premium vehicles, often-packed with gadgets, were the worst affected.

Skoda on top

The stand out winner of this year’s survey was Skoda. Yes, Skoda, the down-to-earth brand that’s been the butt of many jokes for years came out top for the second year running.

Skoda’s cars might not be pretty, but other makers could learn a lot from them. Keep it simple.
