How To Boss It Like… Rytis Vitkauskas, CEO YPlan

There are a handful of business leaders Britain who are changing the world. Eileen BurbidgeDaniel Waterhouse and Martha Lane-Fox seem to get an incredible amount done, in an impossibly short space of time.

This morning we’re talking to our fourth industry leader who effortlessly manages a successful event technology business across both sides of the Atlantic.

Rytis Vitkauskas is Founder and CEO of YPlan, ‘Tonight’s Going Out App’. The platform connects millions of people to last minute events and has seen a meteoric rise to fame since Stephen Fry endorsed it back in 2012.

In 2015 YPlan was crowned the fastest growing UK startup by The Next Web. The company has expanded to America and attracted further celebrity attention with Pharrell Williams (pictured above) spotted at their New York launch party.

So how does Rytis Vitkauskas get so much done? The Memo decided to find out.

What time do you get up, and what part of your morning routine sets you up for the day?

I wake up at 6:50am to the alarm set to the soothing sounds of my Sense sleep tracking device on my pillow.

As a rule, I don’t check my phone under any circumstances 30 minutes after waking up, which allows me to start the day by taking advantage of all the sub-conscious thinking my brain had done while I was sleeping, and putting priorities in my head clearly before I get hit with the non-stop ping-pong action that is email.

I jog sometimes but would like to jog more, so typically I wake up, kiss my still-asleep wife Simona and a take shower.

What apps or methods do you use to be more productive?

There is no magic, I just don’t respond or react to pitches, meeting requests, and other things that are irrelevant. Google Calendar is my main guide during the day for what’s next.

What smartphone do you use?

I use an iPhone 6s in Space Grey with the max capacity storage (128gb) as well as an iPhone 5s.

I carry two phones for app testing + UK/US phones depending on where I am.

How many people, outside of family, do you meet in a day? And who are they?

Other than team meetings and calls, I meet 5-10 people a day.

These are typically existing and potential event partners, distributors, marketing partners, journalists, job candidates, investors, and my team members for 1-on-1 discussions.

When do you work until? Are you still sending emails in the night?

There is frankly no cut off point during the week. I do send emails in wee hours but worse yet, I expect a response almost as soon as I send it out.

I try to take one day or at least half day a week off, that’s typically Sunday.

To even touch the phone then is a sin, this is family and friends time which is massively important in order to maintain balance in life and balance in perspective.

Come back next Thursday for our next #BossItLike interview, and get in touch if you know a tech leader who’s also a productivity guru for us to talk to.
