In the future Michelin-starred restaurants will deliver to your door

Will dining out become a thing of the past? No more queuing for hours outside the next overhyped restaurant that won’t take reservations. No more surly waiters and agonising waits for the bill.

As we’ve reported before, the future of food comes in a cardboard box. Only this time, you won’t need to cook it yourself.

Getting a takeaway delivered to your door is nothing new. Today, apps like Just Eat and HungryHouse have become household names, replacing calling up your local for a cheeky Sunday Chinese with a couple of taps of your smartphone.

Turning every restaurant into a takeaway

App-based food delivery has become big business, with JustEat and Hungry House now worth a combined $5bn. But these services are essentially agents between you and your local takeaway, limiting your choice to places already offering delivery or collection.

Step up Deliveroo, the new kid on the block. Deliveroo offers diners access to food from over 5000 mid to high-end restaurants that previously did not deliver to your door.

If you live in London or Paris, you may have spotted Deliveroo’s distinctive armies of cycle couriers outside popular eateries, delivering freshly cooked restaurant meals to well-heeled diners.

The company describes itself as a logistics partner for restaurants and has received huge interest from investors looking for the next big trend in food delivery.

It’s a win-win for consumers and restauranteurs alike, with home diners gaining access to new restaurants and business owners seeing up to 30% increases in revenue without the need for an expensive delivery fleet. The service has even attracted the attention of Michelin-starred restaurants including London-based Trishna.

Today Deliveroo received another $100m of funding which will fund the company’s expansion beyond Europe into Asia and Australia. Launched back in 2013, the company has gone head-to-head with the incumbents Just Eat and Hungry House, raising impressive $200m of investment to date.

Deliveroo currently won’t disclose detailed figures on how popular the service is in the UK but investor appetite is strong. The food fight is on.
